From Paternalism to Gender Equality
This shift is about dismantling barriers and empowering both genders to reach their full potential.
The FES-OMYV youth activist program held another training session on the topic “From Paternalism to Gender Equality” on the 29th – 30th of June 2024. OMYV fellows were taken through two days of in-depth and intensive learning, practicing through group activities, and preparing a good Gender framework guided by the Facilitator: Prof. Adaora Osondu-Oti.
Paternalism: Refers to an approach where someone (an individual, institution, or society) takes control of another person's choices, believing it's for their own good. In the context of gender, paternalism often manifests as men being seen as protectors and providers, while women are seen as needing protection and guidance, limiting their opportunities and freedoms. Paternalistic attitudes restrict women's access to education, careers, or control over their bodies.
Gender Equality: Represents a state where men and women have equal rights, opportunities, and treatment. It involves dismantling barriers that disadvantage one gender and empowers both to make their own choices and reach their full potential. This can include equal pay, access to leadership positions, and freedom from discrimination based on gender.
The Shift:
- The movement "From Paternalism to Gender Equality" highlights the need to move away from a system that controls women's lives to one that empowers them.
- It recognizes women's agency and autonomy and aims for a society where both genders are treated with respect and have equal opportunities to thrive.
