Decent Work and Just Economy

For Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Nigeria, Decent work and a just economy are quintessential for any society that seeks to foster fairness, equality, and human dignity. Both concepts are much more than mere economic indicators as they sit in the very fabric of societal well-being. They emphasize the importance of work that is not only productive but also respectful of basic human rights and conducive to personal growth.

The concepts of Decent work and a Just Economy, according to the International Labour Organization (ILO), involve work opportunities that are productive and deliver a fair income, ensuring social protection and workers' rights, and promoting social dialogue among employers, workers, and governments, while placing a premium on equity, social justice, and the well-being of all citizens.

FES supports the knowledge creation and campaign for a diversification of the economy especially on the environment-friendly and labour-intensive reindustrialisation of the country. With its partners, FES encourages the national and international debate on appropriate trade regimes, industrial policies, labour market regulation, people-centred policies, just transition and gender mainstreaming. The national conversation on the transition from the practice of minimum wage to a national living wage aligns perfectly with Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Nigeria’s programme on Decent Work and Just Economy.

We consider organised labour as a key player in the fight for democratisation, fair economic development, decent work, gender equity, just transition and social justice. FES accompanies the Trade Unions in their transformation to become more effective and equitable organisations, fostering the agency of women and youth within unions, and adjusting to the changing realities of the labour market. We provide platforms for exchange, analysis, research and targeted training. FES helps the Labour movement and associations from the informal sector to oppose exploitation and to find improved answers to promote pro-poor development.

By bringing important stakeholders like Civil Society, Trade Unions, academics and Government representatives together, FES sensitises, builds capacity, conducts research and supports campaigns on issues like Social Protection, Climate Change and Socio-Ecological Transformation, Just Transition, Equality and Equity, Tax Justice and decent work.
