Leadership training for Nigeria student leaders

The Nigeria student movement has rich history of activism but today the current state of student unionism in Nigeria is generally described as alarming and deteriorating. Student unions once vibrant and effective in championing student’s welfare and political activism have increasingly become corrupt, self-serving with leaders often driven by personal gain rather than public service. Cases of embezzlement and misappropriation of funds, student unions elections have now been marred by violence which undermines the democratic process , there is a lack of ideological clarity which has disempowered students from understanding and being able to navigate complex social issues.

The 2025 Annual Leadership Training and Capacity Building Workshop seeks to unite Nigerian student leaders to address critical issues in public education, particularly the wave of fee hikes and the commercialization of education. This project provided a platform for student activists across the country to build alliances, share strategies, and coordinate actions under a unified front.

Two former student union leaders made presentations at the training, they are Comrade Ene obi and Comrade Adagbo on Neoliberal siege on public education and Student movement: The past, the present and the future respectively.

Participants at the end of the presentations agreed that despite the challenges faced by student unions , student unions still remain active on campuses and continue to play roles in student welfare  and campus governance though their influence is limited  by autocratic university administrative . Calls for revitalization of the student movement emphasize the need for student unions to return to their core values of transparency, selflessness and advocacy for positive change. A united national student union will restore respect and effectiveness in negotiating student interests especially on critical issues like university fees hikes.
