Training of Trainers (ToT) and Module Development Session – Young Workers Leadership Programme 2025 – Abuja Edition

Ahead of the opening session of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) Young Workers Leadership Programme in Abuja—organized in partnership with Mondiaal FNV—this vital role of facilitators was underscored during a two-day Training of Trainers (ToT) and module development session.

While the agenda of any workshop or training programme outlines the goals and objectives, it is the facilitator who plays the critical role of guiding the group toward achieving those outcomes. Even when the agenda is developed collaboratively by the group, it remains essential for one person—the facilitator—to take ownership of how the group progresses through the agenda in an efficient, inclusive, and impactful way.

Facilitators are not just timekeepers or moderators; they are enablers of dialogue, collaboration, and reflection. Working effectively with a group means employing techniques that promote open communication, active listening, and equal participation. This includes creating safe spaces for expression, managing group dynamics, and steering conversations toward meaningful outcomes.

This preparatory workshop brought together facilitators for the nine-month programme, equipping them not just with thematic content but also with the tools and strategies necessary to manage group learning processes.

As the programme prepares to welcome a new cohort of young trade unionists, the foundation laid during the ToT ensures that facilitators are ready to guide participants through a journey of growth, leadership development, and deeper engagement in the trade union movement.
