Workers Perspective on a Just and Green Energy Transition in Nigeria

With support from Mondiaal FNV and Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Nigeria, three of the trade unions most impacted by Nigeria’s shift to a climate-friendly economy have launched their Charter of Demands. A crucial step to ensure the transition is not just green - but also just.

Collaboration with various stakeholders is vital to amplify workers' voices and ensure their concerns and interests regarding Just Transition are heard and addressed.

This core message was highlighted during the public presentation of the Workers' Charter of Demands on Just Transition for Energy Sector Trade Unions in Nigeria. The event was led by three unions: the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), the National Union of Chemical, Footwear, Rubber, Leather, and Non-Metallic Products Employees (NUCFRLANMPE), and the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE). The initiative received support from Friedrich Ebert Stiftung and Mondiaal FNV.

Since 2024, with the support of Mondiaal FNV, these trade unions in Nigeria and Friedrich Ebert Stiftung have worked diligently to enhance the understanding of Just Transition among their members and develop a Workers' Charter of Demands on this topic.

During a panel discussion at the public presentation, representatives from the government, regulatory agencies focused on climate change, employers, and civil society organizations shared their perspectives and experiences. They collectively emphasized the importance of protecting existing jobs, creating new green jobs, and ensuring that workers have access to decent work with fair wages.

Participants also agreed on the need to establish a comprehensive social protection system, recognize workers' rights to participate in decision-making processes related to Just Transition, and create a Just Transition Fund to support both workers and employers in navigating this shift effectively.
