"The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) remains a potent vehicle to drive gender equality and equity in all workplaces, especially in the political space; hence, the NLC must continue to lead the charge for redesigning the leadership structures and processes so they are equal but inclusive". Those were the opening comments of Comrade Ekene Ikwelle while speaking on behalf of the #FriedrichEbertStiftung Nigeria.
The #NigeriaLabourCongress with support from #FriedrichEbertStiftung Nigeria organized a one-day dialogue and campaign with over one hundred women leaders from across the unions on the collective commitment to embracing equity towards gender equality in all workplaces across Nigeria.
The dialogue session was organized to commemorate International Women's Day 2023 and strengthen the campaigns to eliminate violence and harassment in the World of Work.
The objectives were to raise consciousness on the need to "embrace equality" in line with the 2023 International Women's Day; promote gender equality in the World of Work; strengthen the campaign towards eliminating violence and harassment in the World of Work as stipulated in the ILO Convention 190; create the platform for women trade unionists to build alliances with critical stakeholders for the social, economic and political advancement of women; and provide a voice for the voiceless especially the women in the informal sector and other vulnerable groups;
It was a delight to learn that Nigeria has ratified International Labour Organisation (ILO) Convention 190, and we congratulate the leadership of the congress for outstanding work done through its National Women Commission.
"The Nigeria Labour Congress remains a potent vehicle to drive gender equality in all workplaces, especially in the political space; hence, the NLC must continue to lead the charge for redesigning the leadership structures and processes so they are equal but inclusive". Those were the opening comments of Comrade Ekene Ikwelle while speaking on behalf of the #FriedrichEbertStiftung Nigeria.
Participants agree that when issues around gender mainstreaming are discussed, it is quintessential to understand that equality alone is not enough.
NLC national president, Comrade Joseph Ajaero, used the occasion to call on the federal government, employers and trade unions to adopt strategies for implementing the ratified ILO Convention 190 for the realization and protection of women's rights, increased productivity, decent work and dignity of labour.
Represented by the labour centre national secretary, Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja, Ajaero said gender equity remains a collective responsibility to challenge gender stereotypes, discrimination, and bias and promote the socioeconomic, cultural and political advancement of women and all vulnerable groups in the interest of justice, sustainable development and democracy.
