We are living under the unceasing threat of intensifying maximum and minimum temperatures, rising sea levels, droughts, storms, heatwaves, wildfires, hurricanes, and warming oceans. These effects can directly harm life, destroy habitats, and create challenges to livelihoods and communities. The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Nigeria office in collaboration with the Coalition for Socio Ecological Transformation (CoSET), organized a Post COP26 event on 20 January 2022, to discuss the outcome of COP26 along the lines of gains, disappointments and missed opportunities.
The session also focused on the Just Transition Declaration, Youth participation, Youth Framework and meaningful Youth Capacity Building and Engagement. The meeting was also expected to consolidate the wins of the Youth Consultation on the NDCs that was carried out by the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung.
Speaking on behalf of the Minister of State for Environment, the Director, Department of Climate Change, Mrs Iniobong Abiola-Awe stated that the ministry recognizes the central roles young people play in effecting climate actions in Nigeria and is therefore committed to partnerships and collaborations to certifying youth’s involvement, and the integration of their collective, practical, and innovative green strategies into the Just transition implementation procedure.
Participants urged the organizers and the Ministry of Environment to develop plans on how to train young climate change professionals on the intricacies and processes of negotiations within the CoP process. There were calls to create a Roadmap to COP27, which will ensure that the potential participants from Nigeria, work together to develop priority engagement areas for Nigeria and Africa ahead of the next COP slated for Egypt.
