Young Workers Training - Module 2: Political Economy of the Nigerian Crisis and the Quest for Social Justice

In the last three decades, the character of work has changed as a result of increasing neo-liberal economic policies, economic restructuring, financialization, migration, immigration and powerful multinational capitalist corporations that has gained greater control over economic and political power. This has had grievous effects on the capacity of unions and the labour movement to represent, defend and empower workers.

The Module 2 titled “Political Economy of the Nigerian Crisis and the Quest for Social Justice from April 28th – 29th at the Textile Labour House, Acme Road, Ikeja Lagos, facilitated by Gbenga Komolafe the General Secretary of the Federation of Informal Workers of Nigeria (FIWON) and Ebenezer Ishola of University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos discussed how workers are responding to the proliferation of neo-liberal ideas and institutions that are resistant to labour organisation and social justice.

Participants agreed that workers power has drastically declined as multinational institutions continue to forge neo-liberal economic policies which has dire consequences for union organizing and union density.

Young workers were challenged to become more passionate crusader of pro-working-class policies that seeks to advance the economic viability of youths and workers.
